OK, so I really struggled with a title for this post because I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to say. But, I wanted to let you know what I bought and how I saved. But, first I want to explain to you WHY I bought what I bought.
As we partied away for New Years Eve and went to bed anticipating what 2018 was going to bring us, it most definitely was not what we had expected. It brought banging on our door at 7:30 in the morning with news that my brother in law George had passed away.
Just a week earlier, he was down here visiting us. (he is the one in the back with the red shirt on)
We had gone out to lunch as a family and he was planning on going to a rock & mineral store he had heard about here in CT (he is from MA) He came down because he knows that I also LOVE and collect rocks. He was searching for the perfect gift for his daughter for Christmas.
Him and I took a ride out to this shop and spent almost 2 hours just looking at everything and talking. We were both in our element (<—–see what I did there lol)
While we were in the store, I found a Grateful Dead etched rock (George LOVES Grateful Dead- he has it tattooed on his neck!) and he was super excited. He carried it around him pretty much the whole time we were shopping and I had expected that he was buying it for himself. We even cracked a few jokes about it being pink 🙂
To my surprise, he put it back.
After the news broke that he had passed, that was all I could think about. My husband was mourning the loss of his brother and I was having a hard time trying to console him. I decided that I would take my husband on the same day George and I had so he could walk in his footsteps. Maybe he would find some solace & comfort in things he knew his brother loved.
And, what do you know. We walked into the rock & mineral store and what was STILL on the shelf- the Grateful Dead rock. My husband saw it and picked it up immediately with tears in his eyes. The lady had also mentioned that she remembered me. I told her that the man I had been in with a week or 2 prior had passed away and she remembered him wanting that rock. She immediately sold it to my husband and gave him 25% off AND a stand to put it on for FREE.
Don’t always think the price marked is what you have to pay. Many store owners and managers are able to change the pricing of items as they see fit to help their customers.
But, since George finally got his rock (even if it was in death) I had not bought a rock yet. I was in option shock until the shop owner mentioned one little thing to me- below retail pricing! She had a box of rocks that had yet to be inventoried meaning they were marked well below retail AND she would be willing to offer me an additional 20% off. SOLD. I of course found a black rock because well, I love black (even my wedding band and engagement ring are black diamonds) and I can’t say no to that kind of discount.
We got home and I added my 2 new rocks to my collection and made sure to put “George” smack dab in the middle so he can’t be missed and I had to add my rock right next to him just for the comfort of knowing that him and I shared such a love for rocks and that is how I am able to keep his memory alive <3
So, next time you are out shopping, don’t hesitate to ASK if they have a sale, what kind of discount hey can offer you AND if they have items that are not in inventory yet. All of those are super simple ways to save without needing a coupon.
