This has got to be one of the biggest questions. Which store is better?! Walmart or Target? We know that they are major competitors of each other so how do they actually stack up? It can be based on personal preference or convenience but when it comes down to it, one has got to be better than the other.
Price Matching: Both stores price match almost all of the same stores including online retailers but they each has their own unique way to do it. One of the major differences is that at Walmart, you can price match right at the cashier. At Target, you must go to Guest Services to price match an item. Both require the item to be in stock and the item being price matched must be identical to the item listed online or inside of a sales flyer. Both limit the amount of items you can price match. According to both policies, they limit to one identical item per price match. Meaning if you find Tide detergent for .99 cents on Amazon and you want to buy 40 bottles, both will limit you to just 1 bottle of Tide for the price matched price. At Target, you must provide the ad or the information on your phone or tablet which the associate will verify on their own computers located at Guest Services. Walmart does not require the customer to have the ad with them to honor the price but they do reserve the right to verify the price. But, Walmart has pulled their Ad Match Guarantee from over 500 stores.
Walmart also has an app called the Saving Catcher which is an app that will compare your purchases with competitors in your area for a lower price. You are required to upload a photo of your receipt and if Walmart finds a lower price, they will refund you the difference on an e-gift card. At Target, if you find a lower advertised price on an item that you have already purchased, you have 14 days to bring in your receipt and the price will be adjusted and the difference refunded back to you! My feeling on the Savings Catcher is that you spent too much money in the first place hence the reason other stores have it cheaper than Walmart.
Coupons: Walmart and Target both accept manufacturer coupons. Walmart has no limit to the amount of identical coupons you can use. Unless of course the coupon itself limits you (remember that a coupon always trumps a coupon policy) while Target limits their guests to 4 identical coupons per day. Walmart is one of the only stores that will pay YOU for your coupons. What that means is if you buy something in store for $1 and you have a coupon for $3 off, Walmart will give you $2 cash or apply the overage to the other items that you are buying. Target will adjust down the value of the coupon so the item is free but you do not get overage. As of now, it sounds like Walmart is the winner BUT Target has something even better than overage. They offer store coupons which Walmart does NOT. Store coupons can be stacked with a manufacturer coupon for double the savings on a single item. Target offers text message coupons that can be delivered right to your smartphone. Just text the word OFFERS to 827438 to get signed up. Target also offers printable coupons on their website (click HERE to print Target store coupons) which are different than those you can receive via text message. Target will also offer random store coupons inside of your Sunday coupon inserts. A few times a year, Target will also release a coupon insert filled with nothing but Target store coupons! Store coupons can be found at Guest Services as well as at the pharmacy too! On top of the variety of store coupons, Target also offers something called Cartwheel. Cartwheel is another form of store coupon inside of Target. Instead of a dollar amount off of an item, it is a percentage off. A Cartwheel offer can be stacked with a regular Target store coupon (any of those explained above) and a manufacturer coupon for triple the savings! You can download the Cartwheel app from either your Play Store or App Store and simply show it over to the cashier to scan for your savings.
Credit Cards: Both Walmart and Target have their own credit cards. When you apply and get approved for a Walmart credit card, you will save 10% off on purchases up to $250. Plus, you will save 3% at Walmart.com and only 1% inside of Walmart stores. These savings will appear as a credit to your bill and will not come off at the register. Target offers something called the Target REDcard. You are not limited to just a credit card though! Target has given you the option for a Target Debit REDcard . Both have the same exact benefits. Having a Target REDcard means you don’t have to pay shipping charges from Target.com, you extend your returns to 60 days instead of 30 days AND you save 5% off in store and online every time you use it! It is FREE to sign up for a Target Debit REDcard. There is no credit check, no monthly bill, no interest. It links right to your bank account! If you don’t have one yet, you can sign up HERE.
Registries: Both Target and Walmart offer gift registries whether it be for a new baby or for a wedding or special occasion such as a birthday. BUT, they do differ. First, let’s start with the Baby Registry. Target offers a welcome kit which includes $50 worth of coupons & handpicked samples which you can picked up at Guest Services. Plus, get a coupon for a 15% discount eight weeks prior to the big day AND get a 15% discount on anything left on your registry. You also have up to one year after your event date to return or exchange items from your registry. (You can create a Target registry HERE) Walmart also offers a Welcome Box including product samples. They include a price match guarantee if it is listed elsewhere for a lower price. Walmart also has a registry app where you can access your registry. Also included on the Walmart app is the wedding registry. You can scan items in store to add to your registry as well as manage and buy directly from the app. Target on the other hand a few more perks for a wedding registry including 15% discount on everything left on your registry after the big day, bonus gifts from select brands with qualifying purchases, on-the-go access with the Target Registry app, easy returns and exchanges up to a year after your event. PLUS their registry is a universal registry meaning you can add items from other sites to your Target gift registry. (You can create a Target registry HERE or a Walmart registry HERE)
Sales: Well, this one is an easy no brainer. Walmart does not offer “sales”. They pride themselves on everyday low prices. Which means their prices are pretty much guaranteed to be less than the regular retail price of an item at another store. Their prices do not change often unless they put something on clearance or offer a “Rollback” on a specific item. Although this is helpful to those on a budget because they know exactly what the price of item will be week after week and month after month, a sale price is typically lower than Walmart’s everyday price. Target offers weekly sales. They offer a weekly sales flyer that comes out on Sunday’s. Targets sales run from Sunday through Saturday. An item that is on sale is typically 20%-40% off the regular retail price of an item making them cheaper than Walmart’s regular price. Combine that sale with all of the above tools to save even more at the store!
And, must I say, Target has a Starbuck’s in it! You can use your REDcard to save an additional 5% off at Starbuck’s as well as special Cartwheel offers. Plus, you can also use your Starbucks Rewards app to get free breakfast sandwiches, coffees and more! Need I say more?
So, to me the clear winner here is Target. Before I started couponing and really budgeting my money, I used to always shop at Walmart. But, once I found out how much more I could save at Target, I have switched and haven’t looked back. Those television commercials have people brainwashed that Walmart is the place to save money and that Target (typically referred to as Tarjay) is too expensive. After taking a look at all the ways to save above, have you changed your mind? What do you think? Put your 2 cents in the comments! I would love to hear your thoughts or if you think I have missed something ♥
