Filling up our cars with gasoline is simply a way of life. We cant get to the grocery store or to work without it. It is one of those necessity items that we pay for no matter what the price. Ever heard the term “summer gas” and for some reason it is more expensive! Why?! Probably because more people are out driving around so they make more money. The fluctuation in gas prices can also make it really hard to try to budget weekly to be able to fill up your tank. Gas prices range from $2 to $4 which means when gas it at the higher end, it could cost you double what you had budgeted to spend on gas. I know many times I am stopping and putting in $10 just to get me where I have to go. Don’t fret yet, there is a bunch of ways to save money on your gas and I’m going to tell you how!
1- Big Box Stores- Some larger chains (such as BJs Wholesale) have their own gas station and offer gas at a discount just for members. The gas is usually 10-15 cents cheaper than at a regular gas station. If you have a membership, then this is a great way to save a few bucks on gas. You figure if gas at one of these stations is 15 cents cheaper than at a regular gas station, filling up a 20 gallon tank can save you $3.
2- Gas Station Promotions- Some gas stations offer you the opportunity to apply for one of their credit cards and get anywhere from 5-10 cents off per gallon every time you use their credit card. If you drive a lot (and want to add to your bills) then this might be something to look into. If a credit card isn’t the way for you, gas stations such as Cumberland Farms offer something called SmartPay. Link the SmartPay card or your phone (you must download the SmartPay app) to your checking account and every time you use SmartPay, you save 10 cents per gallon. Want to apply? Click HERE.
3- Grocery Store Loyalty Cards- Many grocery stores offer a discount at the gas stations by using your grocers loyalty card. Simply by shopping for groceries, you can earn gas points to help you save money at the pump.
Grocery Stores that Offer Gas Discounts:
Big Y- If you shop at Big Y, those coins can get you a discount on gas. A silver coin will get you 5 cents off per gallon (up to 20 gallons) and a gold coin will give you 20 cents off per gallon of gas. There is a bunch of different gas stations that participate so to find a gas station near you, click HERE.
Price Chopper- with Price Choppers Fuel Advantage loyalty card, members earn 10 cents off per gallon (up to 20 gallons) for every $100 they spend in store (after coupons). These points can be used at over 200 Sunoco stations to get discounts on fuel. Points are good for 30 days so you have a month to earn and use your points. Also, check the weekly flyer for Bonus Fuel Items. By buying these specially marked items you can save even more on gas.
Stop & Shop/Giant- I had to save the best for last. This store is ridiculous (in a good way) with gas points. There have been times when I have gotten my gas for totally free (that’s when the gas isn’t $4 a gallon) First, Stop & Shop gives you 10 cents off for every $100 you spend in the store up to 35 gallons (which is almost double that of Price Chopper and Big Y). These gas points are good for 30 days and are good at any Stop & Shop gas station and most Shell gas stations!
Many times, simply for having a card, you will get a set of coupons in the mail (sometimes even in the store flyer that is mailed to your house weekly!) with a Bonus Gas coupon on it. For example, get a bonus 30 cents off per gallon of gas when you spend $50 or more. (This coupon must be handed to the cashier in order to get the savings) Then, the biggest secret of them all-Flip through your Stop & Shop/Giant circular and find a page that looks similar to the one below. These deals change weekly but let’s take a look at the first box.
“Save 40 cents when you buy ANY 6 items”. To earn 40 cents off per gallon of gas, you would need to spend $400 in the store and if you notice the price of most of the items, they are around $2-$2.50 each! Basically, you can buy 6 items (mix and match) for $2 a piece and spend $12 and earn 40 cents off per gallon of gas. That is a savings of $388!! (Remember, you CAN also use coupons on these items if you have them to bring your out of pocket cost even lower!)
If you fill up for 35 gallons, then 40 cents off per gallon of gas saves you $14 for your entire fill up. 60 cents is a savings of $21, $1 off per gallon of gas will save you $35 on your fill up and $2.20 off per gallon of gas will save you $77! If your car is less than 35 gallons (which it probably is), consider investing in gas cans or taking a friend/family member/spouse/child with you to fill up their car too! The best part about this deal, is that it can be done up to 10 times per sales week. That means you can buy 60 items and earn $4.00 off per gallon of gas. (**Please note that these numbers will change on a weekly basis! This is just an example based on the picture below!!)
There are some fine print associated with this deal that you must know! You can earn as many gas points as you would like BUT you can only redeem a maximum of $2.20. Don’t worry, if you have earned way more than than that maximum redemption, the rest of your gas points stay on your card for next time (or until they expire after 30 days)! Also, check out the gift card deals too! Buy a select gift card and earn anywhere from 2x to 5 x gas points for buying them! If you are in need of a gift for someone, at least this way not only do you get the gift, BUT you also earn gas points as well!
Here is what you could do at the register (based on the picture example below):

Gas Points Earned- $1.60 off per gallon of gas or a savings of $56 at the pump! Which means that what you spent in groceries basically paid for itself at the pump. Your goal is to spend the same (or close to it) on gas point items as it will save you at the pump. Good luck and happy pumping ♥
Make sure to check back on the blog weekly. I will post the best gas deals and which ones are money makers. Also, remember that Stop & Shop’s sales run from Friday through Thursday. Just so you can see that it actually works, check out my receipt from the other day. I filled up both of our cars for only .35¢. That is just a penny a gallon of gas! I do this on a weekly basis so gas is not something we have to even budget for. I always have enough change at the bottom of my purse to fill up both our cars and I always make sure I am doing Bonus Gas Points deals weekly to make sure I always have gas points!
