Most of you probably wonder how in the world you can get your hands on inserts for nothing. Saving money can be expensive. A newspaper can run upwards of $3 a paper! And, you should all know by now that you need at least 4 papers. That adds up to $12 a week, $48 a month or $576 a year! That is A LOT of money. Sometimes, that can hinder someones ability to actually get coupons because the papers are just so expensive. I know, because I have been there. $12 is a lot to come up with when you are broke so even though you NEED to save money, you just can’t because you cannot afford to buy the one thing that can help you save. I have a bunch of ideas to help you get your hands on inserts for nothing!
*Please, DO NOT order inserts online, have them shipped to you, pay someone else for inserts. This is all considered fraud and you can read about HERE.*
1- Friends, Family, Co-Workers & Neighbors– This is probably the easiest place to start. Ask them if they could give you their inserts. Maybe your Gramma gets a paper to read but throws out the inserts which means you have gotten your hands on some inserts!. This is also a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. Consider starting a coupon drive at work. Bring in a basket and ask others to bring in their unused coupons. You can share and trade coupons.
2-Newspaper Delivery Person- If you can wake up early enough and catch your newspaper delivery person, let them know you are looking for extra inserts. Sometimes, other households go on vacation, stop their delivery and the newspaper guy can have a few extras left over after he has completed his route.
3- Dumpster Diving- This is a bit extreme and borders on weird, BUT many businesses have a “paper only” bin. If you are a brave soul, go take a dive and see what you can find!
4-Local Businesses- By local businesses, i kinda mean hotels. Many hotels offer their guests a complimentary paper when they stay. All the rooms may not be filled so they are bound to have extras. Also, check with your local gas station or convenience store. If they don’t sell all of their inserts, sometimes they are willing to hand them over to you free of charge.
5- Look for FREE local papers- Sometimes your town offers a free paper that actually has coupons in it! Here in my area, it is called the Foothills Trader. It is distributed mid-week to all the stores and is free for the taking! It has a SmartSource in it so I will grab a few papers and I got my hands on coupon inserts free of charge. Some of you may have a free paper delivered to you mid-week that also has inserts in it along with upcoming sales flyers! Ours here in CT is called the Value Mail.
6- Dollar Stores- So, it isn’t free, but it is a nice discount. Most Dollar Stores sell their Sunday papers for $1. This could be up to a $2 savings per paper!
7- Delivery- Many newspapers offer a delivery option for much cheaper than it is to buy the papers at the store. Sometimes you can grab a years delivery service for around $20-$30 a year! That is 1 paper which means you still have to collect from friends (or dumpster diving). Most newspapers will ONLY deliver you 1 paper though so keep that in mind. For those of you local to CT, I have 2 newspapers that offer a discount to have all 4 Sunday papers delivered right to your house every Sunday and you can check that out HERE.
Hope some of these tips have helped and remember, if you still can’t get your hands on coupon inserts all the time, you can supplement with coupons printed from the internet. (These are NOT the same coupons that you will find in your Sunday paper) you can check out whats available to print HERE.
